BIRDS AND ARROWS: Andrea and Pete Connolly have written their lives into Birds and Arrows newly released record “Coyotes”. Inspired by their bucolic surroundings, the record was recorded at their small, 19th-century, school house turned cabin nestled in the woods on an 88 acre horse farm in Rougemont, NC. Mixed by Chris Stamey of the dB’s, “Coyotes” has a polished yet still organic sound that emotes desperation and longing with a hopeful overtone. Stamey describes the album as “An amazing record, overflowing with invention, dedication and exuberance.”
The sweeping melodies throughout “Coyotes” are beautiful and light. The couples’ song crafting can evoke a wide range of emotions, that at moments can make you smile and then quickly shift into nostalgic melancholy. Corbie Hill of Independent Weekly noted “After six years as a band, it seems as if the Connollys have come to a point of comfort, not only musically but personally: Their new rural home, where they moved in early 2012, enables these two to live as they have wanted to for years. Andrea is surrounded by horses, while Pete drags fields and mends fences in the rural quiet.”
ADRON: Adron is the nom de guerre of Adrienne McCann, young singer and songwriter who has been lately rejuvenating the pop music scene in Atlanta, Georgia. Adron seamlessly blends Classical harmony with the playfulness of ‘60s Brazilian Tropicàlia, the earnestness and sentiment of 70′s songwriters like Joni Mitchell and Harry Nilsson, and the cerebral sincerity of the hymn song. Adron has infused her newest full-length record, Organismo, with an international texture and a remarkably vintage, yet highly original and polished modern sound. She adds to her songs a unique array of embellishments such as bird calls and other vocalizations, sometimes using her voice to mimic the instrumentation of a full orchestra, and sometimes singing in Portuguese and French, using language as another instrument. Her youthful exuberance and adroit musicianship together form a style both distinctive and pleasing, but it is her rare ability to meld genre, geography, and musical epochs that reveal the true breadth of Adron’s talent.

AFRICA UNPLUGGED: This ensemble of seven highly skilled music-magicians have a musical style rooted in the traditional music of West Africa —yet also include influences from around the world, such as Brazil, Dominican Republic, and the United States. Pushed by the power of the Djembe Orchestra this ensemble has booming onstage energy, balanced with the melodic sounds of the kora, acustic guitar and balaphone. This dynamic band blends the best of traditional African music with everything that’s funky about NOW. They take the stage with all the purpose and power of Burning Spear and all the good-time-say-what of a New Orleans Brass Band.

SARAH LOU RICHARDS: NASHVILLE – Sarah Lou Richards has found an ideal musical home at the very busy crossroads of folk and Americana. The lovely blonde Wisconsin native came here five years ago as an aspiring pop country singer and songwriter. But the more she explored the booming new Americana scene in Nashville and discovered its ties to her own hugely varied influences, Sarah Lou began developing her true voice as a writer and singer of intricately crafted musical slices of life that magically meld folk, pop and Americana influences into hooky, varied, and insightful songs that express her musical and lyrical vision.
ANNA ROSE BECK: One of North Carolina’s most promising up-and-coming young songwriters, Anna Rose Beck pens timeless ballads that would have felt as meaningful a century ago as they do today. The Austin, Texas native draws heavily upon visual imagery in her songwriting, carrying the weightiness of her storylines and cleverly worded lyrical wanderings with a voice that has been described as “both bold and understated, moving and hypnotic, brimming with passion but never overpowering,” inviting comparisons to Dar Williams and Natalie Merchant. It’s hard to believe that only a few years ago, Beck didn’t sing or play guitar. In fact, she first picked up the guitar one summer while in the course of completing a biomedical engineering degree at Duke and spent the subsequent school year juggling coursework and a newfound addiction to singing alone in her bedroom. Completely transformed by her passion for songwriting, she began performing at local dive bars shortly after graduating and soon garnered a local reputation for her hushy middle-soprano intensity, finger-picked guitar lines, and whimsical lyrics. A mere two years later, after gathering a modest recording budget with the popular fundraising website Kickstarter, Beck collaborated with Asheville-based producer Andrew Schatzberg to record her 7-song, full-band debut EP The Weathermaker, released in summer of 2011. Since then, she has won over audiences from Austin to Boston to Berkeley, and is in the process of writing and recording the full-length follow-up, to be released in the spring of 2013.

Following five full house performances since its launch in the Spring of 2012, the collaborative performance series Professor Diablo’s True Revue returns to the Durham, North Carolina club Casbah on Tuesday, May 28th to dig through arrowheads, love, and weather stations in a one-time event that explores the theme of “Lost and Found.”
Co-presented by the Center for Documentary Studies and the Hinge Literary Center, the Professor Diablo showcase features writers, musicians, visual artists, actors, dancers and other artists who make use of documentary ideas, methods and impulses in the creation of their art.
$7 in advance, $10 at the door.

The artists:
Courtney Fitzpatrick is a biologist and an artist whose primary medium is science. Her undergraduate training was in visual art and she taught photography at New York City’s Hetrick-Martin Institute before returning to her original interest in evolutionary biology and animal behavior. Her collection of non-fiction essays and photographs, Maji Moto; dispatches from a drought (Horse & Buggy Press) emerged from 17 months in Kenya studying primate reproductive biology in the wild with the Amboseli Baboon Research Project. Her ongoing scientific research has been supported by Duke University, the National Science Foundation, a Fulbright Fellowship, and the Leakey Foundation. The focus of her current research interest is sexual selection, the evolutionary process that generates many of the exaggerated sex differences observed in the natural world. She is currently a post-doctoral fellow at the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center (NESCent).
Melissa Swingle is a songwriter who has performed, toured and recorded with her bands Trailer Bride and The Moaners. She recently has been performing with a group called Melissa and the Swinglers and now is at work on a solo record. Born in Memphis ,Tennessee and raised in Mississippi and in Ivory Coast, West Africa, she has toured all over the U.S. with Neko Case, The Mountain Goats, M. Ward, Drive-By-Truckers, and Calexico, and has opened for Wanda Jackson and Hasil Atkins. She is a multi- instrumentalist that prefers to re-tune her guitar or banjo rather than playing it the standard way. She also plays the singing-saw like no
one else and just recorded saw tracks in the studio with Dexter Romweber for his next release.
Leah Sobsey is an artist and educator raised in Chapel Hill and Durham, North Carolina. She works in traditional, digital and alternative-process photography, mixed media installations and public art, exploring memory and the notion of collections as they relate to personal and public identities. Sobsey has exhibited nationally in galleries, museums and public spaces, and her work is held in private and public collections across the country. Co-founder of the Visual History Collaborative, she received an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and a BA in Anthropology and Sociology from Guilford College, taught at the San
Francisco Art Institute and the Maine Photographic Workshops, and now teaches at the Center for Documentary Studies and the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. Her current work includes Collections, a photographic series on endangered specimens from the National Parks Museum collections, and Bull City Summer, a collaborative documentary project that explores the Durham Bulls.
Jane D. Marsching is an interdisciplinary artist who explores our past, present and future human impact on the environ- ment through interdisciplinary and collaborative research-based practices. She has worked with scientists, educators, kite builders, meteorologists, architects, and musicians, and her projects have been sited in museums and galleries as well as weather observatories, public parks, city streets, radio waves, and the internet. She has exhibited at North Carolina Museum of Art and MassMoca, received grants from Creative Capital and the LEF Foundation, and coedited Far Field: Digital Culture, Climate Change and the Poles (Intellect). Co-founder of the forum Platform 2: Art and Activism, she teachers at Massachusetts College of Art and
Design, where she is Associate Professor and Sustainability
Fellow working to create an interdisciplinary concentration in Sustainability. Victor McSurely collaborated on her “NOAA Webcam” piece featured in Professor Diablo’s True Revue.

DEEP CHATHAM: Rising from the ashes of the popular North Carolina band Baby Cowboy, Deep Chatham was formed by guitarist Julian Sikes and upright bassist Jeff Loops. Ferociously talented songwriters, the duo crafted a heavy handful of original songs characterized by driving rhythms, intricate harmonies, and haunting melodies. They immediately took their act on the road and began a relentless schedule of playing music festivals, clubs, barrooms, and street corners from the deep south to the edges of the pacific northwest. Arriving in the tiny town of Talkeetna, Alaska, their paths fortuitously crossed with the gifted fiddle and banjo player Matt Heckler. The power of this songwriting trio was immediately apparent and the duo set forth as a power trio. Arriving home in North Carolina after a series of highly successful shows from San Francisco to Maine, Deep Chatham recorded their long anticipated 2011 album, “Words from the Well”. Known for their dedication to their craft and willingness to play anytime, anywhere, the trio sets forth once again in 2012 to conquer fans with their high energy live performances and infectious songs. From the stages of music festivals to your local street corner, keep your eyes and ears open.

Following a year that introduced him to international success, James McCartney is already headed towards an exciting and unprecedented 2013.
McCartney is fresh off the release of his two digital-only EPs, Available Light and Close At Hand, as well as his first physical release, The Complete EP Collection, a special two-disc set produced by David Kahne and Paul McCartney that includes the debut EPs in their entirety along with five bonus tracks. Now in the studio once again, James McCartney is preparing to release what will be his first full-length album in 2013, accompanied by major US and European tours.
The US tour will bring McCartney to over 50 cities coast-to-coast as he performs a unique solo-acoustic show of never-before-heard material mixed with fan favorites. Accompanying himself on guitar and piano, McCartney’s soaring vocals, songwriting, and musicianship are highlighted in this intimate and powerful setting.
The success of The Complete EP Collection catapulted McCartney to national awareness in America with his U.S. television debut on The Late Show with David Letterman. McCartney followed with his first tour of North America. Of McCartney’s performances The NY Daily News writes: “An infectious set . . . [he] has clearly forged a winning sound of his own.” The Boston Globe adds: “. . . the younger McCartney’s promising pop-rock tunes make clear he’s learned a few lessons about melody, phrasing, and charm.”

JO GORE: Jo Gore and The Alternative is a Rock/R&B/Jazz jam band from the NC Triangle. Band members include: Jo Gore (vocals), Bakru Hunsel (drums), Weldon Kollock (trombone), Bo Lankenau (Acoustic Guitar/Harmonica/Songwriter), Kip Perry (Acoustic and Electric Bass), Tim McElroy (percussion) and Chip Newton (electric guitar). The band has opened for Buddy Guy (September 2011), Al Green (September 2012), Robert Randolph (May 2013), Tommy Emmanuel (June 2013).
Laurece West’s clear, sweet tone and improvisational jazz vocal style frolic through creatively reinterpreted pop, folk, & blues changes. She is a luminous channel for playful and poetic songs of personal transformation, spiritual celebration and love. To this mix, Laurece’s band brings jazz virtuosity and world beat percussion: Kevin Van Sant (guitar), Ben Palmer (upright bass) and Beverly Botsford (percussion.) She is celebrating her recent release “Essence of Love.” Laurece West’s Mom was a Civil Right’s activist swaying to Gospel, Chicago Blues, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Laura Nyro & a diverse record collection. On her father’s side there are 3 generations of professional musicians – 40′s Big Band, 50′s Army band, recording engineers to stars 80′s to right now, current sidemen, band leaders and 2 Grammy nominees.

ITCHINCIDE (Norway): What separates Itchincide from the rest of the heavy metal world? With countless sub-genres, and sub-genres within sub-genres, it has become increasingly difficult for bands to stand out from the crowd. Words such as “brutal”, “melodic”, “technical”, and “epic” are tossed around with little to no impact anymore, and while Itchincide’s music truly encompasses all of these traits, there is one difference that places them miles ahead of the pack… Songwriting. Within their songwriting lie passion, energy, and a diverse sound that manages to keep the traditions of old school speed and thrash metal, while fully embracing the new school edge. If one were to sum up the music of Itchincide, it would be speed, power, complexity, hooks, and heart. Hailing from Tromso, Norway, Itchincide have set their sights on creating a new standard by which modern metal should be judged.
KRYSTOS: Krystos is best described by Their debut album“Walk through the Inferno”. They display a great deal of musicianship on this epic thrash classic! This is a concept album originating from a dark historical poem “Dante’s Inferno”. The album entails many classical interludes, fast catchy melodies and top notch guitar playing . The eleven song metal album has much versatility calling for everything from two clean acoustic guitars to nine distorted guitars. Its gloomy intro and colorful yet foreboding front cover set a darkening atmosphere enough to stand up the hairs on your neck. The album conducts intense and flashy guitar playing abilities yielding sweep arpeggios tapping, well composed solos and melodies, flamenco style, and fast shredding up and down the neck. With a combination of speed and technicality, this album is likely to be dubbed by listeners as one of the better ones of its time. “Walk through the Inferno” is without a doubt a display of good songwriting and intensity, demanding a new vision for its thrash metal genre. We can only hope to expect great things from krystos in the future….
WIDOW: Widow was formed in the winter of 2000 when guitarist Chris got together with John E. to express their vision of metal. Peter also possessed the same dark ideas and their union was inevitable. The lineup was complete to execute their brand of melodic metal!

OLIVER WASH: With a plethora of musical tastes and backgrounds ranging from classical to blues to rock to alternative the band “Oliver Wash” shows no limitations with their writing ability and style. Starting in May 2011 with a solid five piece line up “Oliver Wash ” has done nothing but try to break of today’s repetitive Music. With music influenced by musicians and bands such as Eric Clapton, John Lennon, Led Zeppelin, Eagles and Jeff Beck the band mixes blues and rock together seamlessly
After playing a countless number of shows in the past years, across North Carolina and the Tennessee area, Oliver Wash” is preparing to start a new chapter. They have just finished recording their debut full length entitled ‘Black Roses’. They are releasing it independently as a testament to all their hard work over the last two years. “This is everything we are and more.” stated Oskar Price. After the CD’s release the band is planning on continuing to shows for anyone and everyone into the New Year, while also searching for a label to possibly call home. So be ready and gear up for the Blues Rock to begin with this band as they make a name for themselves.

DARYL SHAWN: Daryl Shawn grew up among Amish farms in rural Pennsylvania, studied classical and flamenco guitar in between jazz classes at Berklee College of Music, hitchhiked to San Francisco and formed Maxwell Horse, a trio which was soon opening shows for the likes of Brendan Benson and Rocket from the Crypt. After four releases and a number of successful tours, he split up the band and left the United States for the remote Mexican city of Oaxaca, where he spent five years writing solo instrumental and vocal songs and building his own approach to the acoustic guitar outside the influences of any scene. Leaving Mexico in 2009, he spent several years with no fixed address before settling in Brooklyn, New York.Shawn is frequently on the road and has developed a taste for endurance challenges, from undertaking solo tours of up to 45 dates by train and bus to doing a full set in each of New York’s five boroughs in one marathon day of performance.Currently, Shawn is celebrating the release of his latest album, “In Place”, while continuing to book and play live shows all across North America.

The first song of Kevin’s that just floored me was “Noticed the Moon.” It’s sung from the perspective of a guy who “even on the good days was into something bad” gazing up at the night sky while bleeding to death after wrecking his truck. He thinks about his mom, his son, a lifetime of mistakes and how it’s taken this moment to slow him down long enough to really look at the world. Everybody knows a guy like that, but most people aren’t writing songs about him.
Like a true artist, Kevin pays attention when other people aren’t. How many times have you passed a little cross on the side of the road and thought nothing of it? Kevin noticed. And, after listening to his song “Highway Crosses” I never pass one without giving it some thought.
I’ve seen Kevin perform the song “Funny Ha Ha” in concert several times. Audiences often laugh at the first line: “He was their little crossdresser/their handsome feller/with a Barbie doll.” But by the tragic end of the song listeners realize they’ve gotten something they hadn’t expected. They remember a kid like that. Maybe it could’ve been their son or brother. And what might they have wished they had said or done differently? Kevin’s performed it in front of the kind of audiences who are not used to hearing songs that challenge them. But he isn’t preaching. He’s telling a story and you can take from it what you will.
Not all of his songs are sad. There are plenty of light moments on “Some Stories,” including “The Drama House” – a song about being the sole bearer of a Y chromosome in the home he shares with his wife and three daughters, and the bluegrassy “Gudger Town,” an old man’s recounting of his rural small town life. “She Loves Jesus” is a song Kevin’s been performing for a decade or more, but never seemed to fit on another project.
Part of Kevin’s perspective comes from growing up the small East Tennessee town of Madisonville and dreaming of going off the big city. For a few years, he did. He was a guitar slinger in San Francisco and Nashville before returning to Tennessee to settle in Knoxville. For the past several years Kevin has performed with his trio the Kevin Abernathy Band and delivered his songs with loud electric guitar, drums and bass. On “Some Stories,” Kevin enlisted his buddies Sean McCollough of the Lonetones, Greg Horne and some of Knoxville’s best musicians to offer a quieter album that lets the lyrics stand out. Leah Gardner, Mic Harrison, Steph Gunnoe, Maria Williams, Steve Corrigan, Jeff “Geezer” Simms and Dave DeWitt all lend a hand. And you can hear Kevin’s three daughters adding some sweet background vocals on “Locked Up In The Keys” and “The Drama House.”
Audiences who know Kevin are used to him rocking your butt as much as your brain. On “Some Stories” he’s going straight for your heart.

TROPHY FIRE: The Trophy Fire is a three-piece American rock band hailing from San Francisco, California. Beginning as a studio project in 2008 while songwriter/guitarist/vocalist Ben Flanagan was between tours with his former band, The Actual (signed to Scott Weiland’s Softdrive Records), The Trophy Fire partnered with Talking House Records and released their debut,A Lifetime In The Middle Of The Ocean, in August of the same year. The album featured numerous guest collaborators, and compositions written by Flanagan and original co-leader, Jamie McGoldrick – sparking initial interest in the band and seeing them taking the stage at SXSW and other festivals as the project grew into a full-fledged band
VIOLENT DREAMS: Violent Dreams is a heavy rock band made up of guitarist/singer G. Register, and drummer T. Romero. Both musicians have previously toured and recorded extensively in various rock bands, notably as frequent openers for Disturbed, production collaboration with Chris Manning (Metallica, Santana, Third Eye Blind) and Johnny K (Staind, Sevendust, Disturbed, 3 Doors Down).
THRLL KILLERS: The Thrill Killers was formed in late 2010 by Sam Illich, John Marlatt, Jimmy Russell, and Damian Arletto. Sam hails from Chicago IL. and was the front man of local legends Peace Corpse. John is from Escondido CA. and is a founding member of SoCal metal band Flashburn (currently on hiatus). Jimmy Russell appeared out of nowhere with his wild lead guitar skills from Baltimore MD. and is currently a member of Bag of Humans based out of Baltimore MD. Damian Arletto is from Los Angeles, CA. and formerly played for Cage, Conflict of Interest (C.O.I.) and most recently Jane Likes Dick. Last but not least, we added Steve Kramer. A derelict serial killer from NYC we picked up in Las Vegas NV. that happens to play bass, The five of us tossed into a meat grinder merged the overwhelming power of each respective band into one… The Thrill Killers.

Greg Trooper: a singer/songwriter who has released 11 albums since 1986. Raised in the shore town of Little Silver, NJ he became enthralled by the greater New York area’s rich music scene. He discovered a sort of holy musical trinity in the work of Otis Redding, Bob Dylan, and Hank Williams, with their guiding lights of passion, literary dexterity and plainspoken honesty. It’s one reason Trooper’s music feels equally informed by Memphis soul, Greenwich Village folk and Nashville twang.
Trooper has made an impact on the music scenes in all the places he’s lived since leaving home after high school: Austin, Texas, Lawrence, Kansas, Nashville and New York. Music critics praise his poetic feel, infectious melodies and insightful lyrics.Americana star Buddy Miller produced 1998’s ‘Popular Demons’ album, while soul legend Dan Penn steered 2005’s extraordinary ‘Make It Through This World’.
His songs have been recorded by numerous artists including: Vince Gill, Steve Earle, Billy Bragg, Robert Earl Keen, Maura O’Connell, Lucy Kaplansky and Tom Russell.
Touring nationally and internationally, Greg usually performs solo but on occasion you can find him fronting anything from a trio to a five-piece band depending on the gig.
